Choosing The Right Plants When Hillside Landscaping Will Help Control Soil Erosion

Determine The Amount Of Area To Be Used As Well As How To Use That Area

A good hillside landscaping project would involve having steps running up the hillside as well as a retaining wall. The presence of steep slopes is a challenge to anyone that has hillside landscaping acumen because the novice would often end up wasting time and money on unsuccessful attempts at hillside landscaping. Very often, soil is lost due to erosion and, for this, it may be advisable to install a dry creek bed. In case one has a property having a slope from which excess water flows down and thus erodes the soil as well as a drainage problem then the best solution to getting rid of puddling is by building a dry creek bed.

Many first time owners of property do not have hillside landscaping as one of their top priorities, especially as they may be more taken up with paying off their mortgages. Nevertheless, with a little bit of ingenuity and some helpful guidance, the hillside landscaping problem may be solved and a near perfect vertical landscape would be created that would be able to convey such hillside landscaping ideas perfectly.

Before beginning the hillside landscaping experience, one needs to determine how much area is to be used and what would be the usage of such an area. It could mean having a meandering slope or stairs or even ladders, if the terrain permits, and it is also possible to create a mélange of the three. One should also make a conscious effort to use material that is indigenous to the area as it would make seamless integration of the overall appearance, easily achieved. One should also not use plastics as well as bright colors unless absolutely necessary. In addition, one may also bet on wood, rocks and wood chips to embellish the hillside landscaping.

One also needs to pick and choose the right plants as all plants are not suited for inclines, though it is less true of flowers and small bushes and is of vital importance when planting trees. A good hillside landscaping tree is the conifer which has a robust root structure that enables them to be exposed to a greater degree and can also survive off poor soil and they also provide some much needed color all year ro

und. One can also layer the slopes through alternation of large plants with small bushy ones and it will enable the concealment of the terrace and provide a seamless quality to the hillside landscaping also. Potted plants should also be used to stand out and catch the eye.

What is most important, however, is tackling soil erosion. The bigger plants that have greater roots can hold the soil in place and will also absorb water that may have otherwise washed away valuable nutrients. Large plants also provide shade as well as shelter from winds and are vital to avoiding erosion by wind.

Eco-friendly Landscapes

Green homes are now slowly becoming popular with growing number of people preferring them to conventional homes. Green homes have a more healthy quality of indoor air, yield more energy and water efficiency, and promote a better and cleaner environment, in the process reducing environmental impacts.

Modern green homes no longer look weird but are stylishly designed, be they remodeled, newly constructed or refurbished traditional homes. Although most green homes are the traditionally wooden-built homes, options are now available for natural buildings such as super adobe, straw bale, bamboo, rammed earth, clay/straw wall systems, insulated concrete forms, and insulated structural panel systems.

But eco-friendly landscaping is more than just avoidance of the use of toxic chemicals. It employs pro-active systems involving general landscaping maintenance on a month to month basis to include light pruning, weeding, cleanup, removal and termination of weeds, mulching of beds, organic fertilization of trees and shrubs, thatching, aerating, and over seeding of lawns, lime, demossing and fertilization of turf, removal of spent leaves off of bulbs., deadheading of spent blooms on flowers, treatment for flies and insects, start up irrigation, checking for powder mildew and aphids, new planting, pruning of deciduous plants, raking of leaves., pruning of deciduous plants, raking of leaves, and cleanup entrances and walkways. The basic practices employed encompass certain green practices such as:

Variety of plants. Choosing a variety of native plants encourages a more abundant and healthy landscape. This belief also helps to prevent pest and disease devastation. To conserve water, plant beds are designed to grow more draught tolerant plants incorporated around lawn areas.

Turf maintenance. Mowing and clipping of sidewalks, gutters and drives is performed on a regular basis according to the type, health condition and seasonal requirements of the sod.

Pruning. Trees and plants are pruned to maintain health, growth, coverage and visual appeal.

Edging. Edging of planting beds, curbs and driveways are performed bi-weekly as specified on a per site basis.

Bed work. Ground mulch are raked on a regular basis to maintain a healthy appearance. Beds are kept regularly weed free and cleaned of leaves. Landscape de

bris in the landscaped areas will be removed.

Fertilizers. Lawn fertilization use only organic fertilizers. Shrub and tree fertilization are done in accordance with the specifications of the chosen fertilizers as well as what is indicated by the seasonal requirements and conditions of the shrubs, trees, lawn and soil.

Irrigation. Irrigation programming is adjusted on an as needed basis. Repairs, preventative maintenance, winterizing, spring start-up and upgrading are properly coordinated to insure proper work.

Eco-friendly landscaping generates substantial benefits arising from the lowering in landscape maintenance costs, reduction in residential exposure to chemicals and the lessening of risk of ground water contamination. And, according to a study from Michigan State University, eco-friendly landscaping can add 5 to 11% to a home’s base value.

For green homes, an eco-friendly landscape provides opportunities to care for the environment and one’s community. In Seattle, landscaping is eco-friendly. Unlike traditional landscapes, Seattle landscapes use a 100% organic approach to pro-active land maintenance. Seattle landscapes avoid the use of harmful pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and other toxic chemicals.

When some people decide to buy property outside the state in which they currently live, they may be doing it with a lot of knowledge already. They could have the resources of friends and family already living in that state, or the experience of having visited and spent significant amounts of time in the state.
